TEXAS vs. LOUISIANA
INTERSTATE BOXING
CHAMPIONSHIPS

Crowley, Louisiana
April 12, 2008

The Newton Gym & Boxing Club was invited to participate in a great show at Crowley-Kiwanis Recreation Center in Crowley, Louisiana.  Some 84 pre-matched boxers representing the Southern, Gulf and Southwestern Regions weighed in and 42 bouts were scheduled.  The Show was well attended and the crowd enjoyed the action packed Saturday evening.

Newton Gym & Boxing Club coaches Mark Karpel, Wes Barrow and Norris Treme escorted our boxers and enjoyed the 7-hour event.  Six boxers including Ian Wolff, Zane Conner, Skylar Conner, Reginald "Reggie" Mayes, Joe "Montana" Williams and Alex McCain represented the Club.  Unfortunately, due to either a no-show opponent or delays in receiving their USA Boxing® passbook, Wolff and Williams did not have a bout.

Reginald Mayes, 13 and a Burkeville Elementary School student, excited the crowd with his powerful attack and his agility in the ring. Matched in the 180-pound weight class against a Carencro, Louisiana boxer, Reggie took the Championship trophy with a unanimous decision. His wind, endurance and perfect combination punches simply overpowered his opponent late in the second round and throughout the final round.

Skylar Conner, a 12-year old Newton Middle School student, earned his Championship trophy by totally overwhelming a tough and more experienced boxer from Clinton, Louisiana. Henry Allen, Skylar’s opponent, has been boxer for 4 years and was the National Silver Gloves champion in his age and weight class 2-years ago. Skylar kept moving and executing perfect scoring combinations to take a unanimous decision.

Alex McCain, a 16-year old senior at Newton High School, was matched against a tough left-hander, Vinnie Gary representing Backstreet Boxing Club from Lafayette, Louisiana. The bout was action packed from the opening bell and Alex kept the pressure on.  Alex just fell short on points and was awarded the Silver Medal by decision.

10-year old Zane Conner, a Newton Elementary student, used his long reach well and kept jabbing and moving against his worthy opponent, Clayton Sellers, representing Crowley Kiwanis Boxing Club. Zane’s height advantage, quick footwork and precise jabs kept racking up the points. Zane continues his winning tradition, as he was also the 8-year old Texas Silver Gloves Champion in 2006.
